초록

The objective of this study is to define formless fashion design that is being widespread in the 2010s, and determine its path, design characteristics and internal meaning from a qualitative view. This study adopted the research method of qualitative analysis to figure out the path and internal meaning by analyzing cases of application, after conducting a literature review on the background of formless fashion. The concept of formlessness was first developed to break social stereotypes that were standardized and transmitted by foundationalism and functionalism. This art is depicted in unclear lines and shapes because it connotes variability that facilitates transformation into other shapes. The results of the study suggest that formless design in fashion denies and breaks free from things of the past, seeks intentional transformations or distortions, and represents variable designs that do not leave even a single part of the basic shape rather than presenting a special shape. It is based on exclusiveness that refuses to assimilate with others, and does not adapt itself to the shape of human body characteristically while connoting liquidity to change at all times. Designers seek the sole shape based on formlessness that does not resemble anything else in the world because they can express their presence and identity in the world. In addition, they can also record their actions by repeating differentiation of shapes, and overcome their past by breaking away from the idols they had built. This study has significance in that it defines formless design that is being widespread in contemporary fashion, and sheds light on its meaning from a qualitative view.
