Counselors’ Experiences in Psychological Counseling for Adolescents with Borderline Intellectual Functioning: A Qualitative Study using Focus Group Interviews

This study aims to explore counselors' experiences in psychological counseling for adolescents with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) and to identify effective intervention and support strategies in these contexts. Twelve experienced counselors participated in Focus Group Interviews (FGIs), organized into four groups. The transcribed data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. The analysis identified three main categories: ‘challenges experienced in counseling adolescents with BIF’, ‘integrated counseling strategies for enhancing the adaptability of adolescents with BIF’, and ‘support strategies for enhancing counseling effectiveness’. Within these categories, thirteen subcategories emerged. Based on these findings, the study suggests directions for developing effective interventions and strategies for psychological counseling for adolescents with BIF.
