Factors Affecting Employment Transitions among Young People with Disabilities: A Cox Proportional Hazards

초록

This study examined factors associated with employment transitions among young people with disabilities who were not employed at baseline. Using longitudinal data from the 2018–2023 Disability and Life Dynamics Panel, life table analysis, Kaplan–Meier survival analysis, and Cox proportional hazards regression were conducted. The hazard of employment transition was highest during the first year and remained relatively low thereafter. Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed significant differences by age, health status, receipt of National Basic Livelihood Security benefits, and the combined categories of perceived work ability and job-search activity. In the Cox model, compared with those who perceived themselves as unable to work, the hazard of employment transition was 1.844 times higher among those who perceived themselves as able to work but did not engage in job searching and 3.423 times higher among those who perceived themselves as able to work and actively searched for a job. These findings highlight the importance of considering perceived work ability and job-search behavior jointly and providing early, tailored support that helps translate perceived work ability into active job searching and employment opportunities.
