초록

This study examines Diane Cook's The New Wilderness through the lens of rewilding. Rewilding is understood here not as simple ecological restoration or a nostalgic return to pristine nature, but as a process that fosters a cooperative relationship between the natural world and humans in the course of ecological recovery. As a process shaped by the entanglement of nature, humanity, technology, and capital, rewilding reimagines nature as a form of “third nature” in which human and nonhuman agencies are inextricably intertwined. Proceeding from the premise that humans, as part of nature, are themselves subject to rewilding, the study interprets the characters' struggle to survive in the last remaining wilderness after leaving a devastated city as a process of human rewilding. It traces this process on sensory, epistemological, and ontological levels, critiques anthropocentrism, and reconfigures wilderness as a site of emergent “contaminated diversities” in the post-nature era. Drawing on Timothy Morton's concept of the hyposubject, the study explores possible futures of human–nonhuman cohabitation.
