초록

This article examines the gendered discourse of literary texts to explore the engagement of male and female intellectuals with the artistic embodiment in the context of the “New Women’s” movement in early 20th century Korea. It attempts to cover not only “women” as a sex regarded as an indicator of civilization in early modernity but also the areas where things that were pejoratively called “feminine” in the conventional construct are named and evoked as “women” and to analyze the underlying paradigms. Female characters depicted in modern literary works will be presented through Yi Kwangsu’s novel The Heartless (Mujŏng 1917), Kim Tongin’s short story “The Sorrows of the Weak” (Yakhan cha ŭi sŭlp’ŭm 1919), and Na Hyesŏk’s short story “Kyŏnghŭi” (1918). The article will explore the multiple layers of femininity metaphorically expressed in the discourses of men, male artists, and female artists.
