초록
Topographic evolution of Ar+-ion-sputtered Pd(001) is investigated as a function of ion fluence, Phi by using in-situ scanning tunneling microscopy. In the low-Phi regime, adatom and vacancy islands of monatomic height coexist due to the formation of shallow melts by incident ions. With increasing Phi adatom islands dominate over vacancy islands, and show a bimodal distribution, which is attributed to sputter-induced ripening. As ripening proceeds with contunued sputtering, the density of shrinking islands decreases, as does their perturbing effects on the long range ordering of the ripening islands, leading to the development of four-fold symmeric arrangement of the islands.
