초록

In no country of the world do women have equal representation with men in the parliaments and cabinets of their nations' governments. In this research report we analyze this statement with respect to 40 African governments during the period from 1970 to 1996, Additional data collected by the United Nations for 1996 is also examined. Typically, women represent a very small proportion of the members of the cabinet and, often, those women holding cabinet positions are relegated to the less significant ministries. An examination of various socio-economic factors that might explain the variation from country to country in the proportion of women in cabinet positions is also undertaken. Various suggestions for future research are presented.
