This study aims to discuss the educational implications by analyzing Matthew Bourne’s musical ballets Swan Lake and Nutcracker, applying Judith Butler’s concept of ‘performative parody.’ The results of a study based on the above purpose are summarized as follows: First, the work Swan Lake could be discussed in terms of gender. Since the appearance of male swans instead of female ones expresses the gender, reconstituted performatively, breaking away from the privileged images and prejudices of female and male genders, it could be compared and discussed in terms of gender construction of Butler’s performative parody. This is a work that raises a question about the universal sex, which brings up a problem and makes an issue for a discussion out of the fact that natural ‘sex’ has been something socially classified or privileged. Second, in Nutcracker, this study could apply and discuss Butler’s performativity, centering around directivity broadly to the expressions of social power and desire. The independent awakening and practice of the protagonists who overcome the environment that has been given to them correspond to the paradoxical transitivity ‘from negativity to positivity’ on which Butler insists, which could be discussed as a positive aspect that suppression from the power is a displaced place which can rather put the expression of desire into action.
