This study intends to examine the status and problems of the comparative literature studies in Korea, and analyze the function of the American Comparative Literature Association(ACLA)’s ‘Decennial Reports’ in the canonization process of comparative literature in the US and identify and provide strategies for the development of comparative literature studies in Korea. For the goal of the solidification and canonization of comparative literature in Korea, first, the comprehensive categorization and analysis of the scholarly achievements by the Korean Comparative Literature Association (KCLA) which was founded in 1959 is needed in order to build up the historicity of comparative literature studies in Korea. Second, the KCLA should be responsible for periodically reviewing and evaluating the status of comparative literature studies and providing strategies and directions for the development of the discipline. Third, there is a critically growing urgency for the Korean translation of contemporary global scholarly references on comparative literature discourses, published abroad to be share with comparative literature scholars in Korea. Fourth, more attention should be paid to the educational value and methodology of the teaching of comparative literature with a priority in what to teach and how to teach, which is expected to enhance the expansion and sustainability of comparative literature studies in Korea. The vitality and sustainability of comparative literature and its education lie in the discipline’s inherent expansionality which will provide the discipline of comparative literature with a renewed identity as well as an academic motivation, driven by a creative and productive sense of inquietude.
