This study explores Tina Modotti's photos focusing on the social context of Mexico in the 1920s. Most of Modotti’s photos were taken during her stay in Mexico for about seven years. For her work, Mexican society was not only the time-space of taking pictures, but the motive for creation and the driving force for change. Modotti participated in the art movement while having friendship with the avant-garde artists and the muralists who led the nation's cultural projects. For Estridentimo, an avant-garde movement in Mexico, she provided photos showing the aesthetics of modernization and urbanization. She also supported Mexican mural movement for the artists who shared their political views with her. They could use her photos to document and disseminate their mural works. The photographic recording of the achievements of the agricultural school was also a part of the collaboration requested by Mexican society at the time. Later feminist art historians tried to make the woman photographer who was rare at that time, more highly appreciated. Here, it is necessary to reconsider that such a viewpoint has often emphasized femininity over the social context. Her photos of indigenous women can be better understood as a new image of women representing their strength to fight for their own lives as members of society in Mexican society. Modotti's photos are meaningful in that the works are traces of the dynamic struggle of the artist who dreamed of social progress in post-revolutionary Mexico.
