The Mediating Effect of Psychological Burnout in the Relationship Between Counselors’ Emotional Intelligence and the Working Alliance Moderated by Countertransference Management

This study examined the moderated mediating effect of countertransference management in the relationships among counselors' emotional intelligence, psychological burnout, and the working alliance. The participants consisted of 309 psychological counselors. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 and the SPSS PROCESS Macro. As a result of the study, first, the significant partial mediating effect of psychological burnout in the relationship between emotional intelligence and the working alliance was confirmed. Second, the moderating effect of countertransference management was found to be significant in the relationship between psychological burnout and the working alliance. Third, a moderated mediating effect of countertransference management was observed in the path from emotional intelligence to the working alliance through psychological burnout. This study is significant for identifying the characteristics and pathways of psychological counselors in forming a positive working alliance.
