This paper examines the aspects of educational activities of 13 Korean artists residing in the Kanto region of Japan through interviewing with them. In 2004, the Korean Cultural Center of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Japan offered a Korean traditional culture course as a short program in cooperation with the National Gugak Center. Since 2012, it changed into an extended course led by Korean resident in Japan instructors under the auspices of the King Sejong Institute. There are about 80 students in total and more than 75% of Japanese. The Korean traditional instruments and dance classes by the Korean YMCA in Japan have been run by Korean instructors residing in Japan from early 1980 to present. In the beginning, students were mainly Korean residents, but about 70% of students are now Japanese. Some have reached the professional level by studying for 10-15 years. The elementary school division of Tokyo Korean school is running a department of Korean traditional arts as an extracurricular activity. Currently, with 20 students for Korean dance group and 12 students for Gayageum group, the students are mostly the sons and daughters of Korean expatriates temporarily residing in Japan rather than Korean residents in Japan. The teachers are all Korean residents in Japan. The fact that the Korean Culture Center’s course and YMCA’s classes have been continuing has been largely attributed to the role of Korean resident teachers in Japan, who have excellent talents, a long career, and proficient Japanese skills. In addition, it is understood that the fact that Korean heritage students can learn their traditional arts in the only Korean school in Tokyo is based on the efforts of Korean resident teachers in Japan who actively communicate with the students. Most of the Korean resident artists in Japan put emphasis on ‘basics’ when teaching. They point out difficulties such as financial predicament, low interest in Korean culture within Japan, and a decrease of the performance and training opportunities, while expecting for support escalation for the Korean resident artists, improvement of diplomatic relations and expansion of Korea-Japan exchange, and invigoration of joint performances of Korean dance and Joseon Dance. Although Hallyu is one of the increase factors of the Japanese students learning the traditional Korean arts in Japan, the importance of the Korean resident artists in Japan who can promptly meet the needs of times cannot be understated. They will definitely contribute to the diffusion of the Korean culture in Japan as the spreaders of the traditional Korean art as well as the mediators between Korea and Japan if the Korean resident artists in Japan are paid of more attention and support in the future.
