초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the aspects and characteristics of Korean women’s migration to France from the early 1960s when the overseas immigration law was enacted in Korea to the late 1980s when the liberalization of overseas travel was implemented there. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, some Koreans moved to France through various routes, but Koreans’ migration began in earnest, especially with the increase of Korean students going there for study after the Korean War. Most Koreans in France are short-term migrants for study or business rather than for settlement or citizenship. The characteristic of Korean’s migration to France is that it assumes the aspects of voluntary, short-term and female-dominant migration from an industrialized society to another industrialized society. In particular, the aspects of Korean women’s migration to France are very different from those of Korean women who moved to other continents and played a secondary role under patriarchal authority. Additionally, their migration is exceptional in the fact that it was little affected by the family reunion policy, unlike the case of other Asian communities’ women which takes the aspect of collective labor migration or refuge, and that it represents the characteristic of individual migration for study, marriage or employment centering on highly-educated young single women.(Sookmyung Women’s University)
