초록

Arts has recently become a topic of popular interest among early childhood educators due to an increasing recognition of young children's representation. However, it is thus far dominated by the instrumental concerns, cognitive development or symbolic languages, to the exclusion of concern for its purpose, arts as experience. Understanding of arts at the instrumental level could lead to a loss of its intrinsic values. This study aims to explore the role of arts in early childhood education at the existential level rather than the instrumental or disciplinary levels in order to draw the maximum benefit that arts can provide for young children. With the lens of postmodern and Deweyan arts and arts education, existential natures of arts in young children's lives will be discussed. This is an opportunity to illuminate postmodern and Deweyan aesthetics in a way that puts an emphasis on the consummatory phase of life and to reconsider one of the basic principles of early childhood education, children's interest.
