Change and Possibility Through Dance: A Study on Parents Experiences of Dance Program Participation by Adolescents with Developmental Disabilities

초록

The purpose of this study was to understand the meaning and value of dance participation by exploring the experiences of parents whose adolescents with developmental disabilities participated in a dance program. Five parents participated in in-depth interviews, and the data were analyzed using a qualitative approach. The findings were organized into three themes: “Voluntary Dance Beyond the Framework of Therapy,” “A Space Where Change Becomes Visible Through the Body,” and “Discovered Potential, but a Path That Could Not Continue.” Parents viewed the dance program as an artistic experience rather than a therapeutic intervention and observed improvements in their children's emotional stability, self-expression, physical changes, and artistic potential. They also reported positive changes in everyday social behaviors, including turn-taking, interaction with others, maintaining appropriate interpersonal distance, and accepting physical contact, suggesting that the program supported both social adaptation and daily functioning. However, limited opportunities for continued participation after the program highlighted structural barriers to disability arts education. These findings suggest that dance programs have educational as well as artistic value and can serve as practical educational settings that promote the social participation and daily life adaptation of adolescents with developmental disabilities.
