초록
This study aims to delineate the conceptual boundaries of self-defense within the South Korean academic landscape, where the term has frequently been conflated with martial arts-based training and conventional self-protection courses. Utilizing a systematic literature review (N = 15), Walker and Avant's concept analysis procedures were applied to derive defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents. The study operationally defines "physical-based self-defense" as a paradigm emphasizing physical skill acquisition and repetitive practice, in which cognitive appraisal and emotional regulation are not structurally integrated as core components. Building on this analysis, "Embodied Self-Defense" is proposed as a conceptual extension that reconceptualizes self-defense as an integrated capacity combining risk recognition, situational judgment, emotional regulation, and coordinated verbal and physical actions. The analysis reveals that Korean scholarship predominantly situates self-defense within institutionalized contexts, focusing on pedagogical outcomes such as physical fitness, whereas international studies conceptualize self-defense as an integrated competence for violence prevention. These findings indicate a conceptual gap in Korean discourse regarding self-defense as a holistic competence for real-life threats. To address this gap, this study proposes "Embodied Self-Defense" as a framework for conceptual refinement and a reference point for future research and practice.
