초록

This article examines the composition and content of the Correspondence of Army General Tanaka Giichi in 1907-24 which in kept at the Center for Military History, the National Institute for Defence Studies in Japan. The total number of letters included there is 29, which is by no means a large number. However, almost all of these were sent intensively over a period of about one year, from 1921 to 1922. Furthermore, considering the sender, it can be evaluated as a valuable historical materials that can quantitatively and qualitatively supplement the Tanaka Giichi Papers kept in the Yamaguchi Prefecture Archives or in the Modern Japanese Political History Materials Room, the National Diet Library. And by analyzing the contents of the letters, this article were able to present a new perspective on the perceptions of the soldiers, the power structure and the factional conflicts of the Japanese Army which was about to face another turning point in early 1920s, such as the inauguration of Crown Prince Hirohito as regent, the deaths of Yamagata Aritomo and others, the Washington Conference and the issue of army disarmament. This can be considered the other side of the Army that was not revealed in the Hara Takashi Diary.
