The art curriculum is a subject suitable for cultivating knowledge, values, and attitudes that cherishing the environment, but at the same time, it shares the ambivalent aspect that it is also contrary to environmental protection in that it involves exploring physical properties and formative activities through various materials and media. A situation in which the act of protecting the environment paradoxically causes environmental destruction is called the "rebound phenomenon." In order for art education to correctly understand the essence of environmental education and to cultivate desirable awareness and value about it, critical reflection and practice on the rebound phenomenon are required. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to reconsider the meaning of environmental art education through a critical examination of the rebound phenomenon in art education and to seek a direction for realizing the value of education for sustainable development. To this end, the concept and educational significance of sustainable development education and environmental art education were examined, and the direction of environmental art education was sought by examining the rebound effect through a survey of the current status of environmental education in the art curriculum. As a result, it was suggested that efforts should be made to realize the intrinsic value of environmental art education along with a change in perception to overcome the rebound effect in art subjects. The significance of this study is that it reconsiders the practical meaning of art education as education for sustainable development and suggests a desirable direction.
