초록

This study is planned to identify, in the world cultural history, the place of our early typographic culture include Jikji, the first existing ancient typographic book.First of all, the most important thing is that our korean technology of typography preceded the occidental one, which realized the typographic precess; puncheon, matrix, type mold, composition and impression.The cultural and historical signification of this early typography is kept on eye, with its activated printing operation at that age, not only in oriental academic world but also in occidental world. Many occidental scholars like Maurice Courant have made study of early korean typography, even though they have certain limited points of view. To take a reasonable place of its own creativity and merits, we must develop our research with more worldwide viewpoints.
