The purpose of this study was to delve deeply into the experience of parenting among specialized foster parents and to explore the suitability of specialized foster care to the Korean reality from the perspective of the persons concerned. Eight specialized foster parents participated in this pilot project. Six themes were drawn from the following three points in time: motivations for specialized foster care, the foster care process, and the end of foster care. Motivations for specialized foster care included “love for children and experience of general foster care led to specialized foster care.” The foster care process consisted of “breaking the mold” and “becoming a true parent.” The end of foster care consisted of “experience of specialized foster care, which was different from general foster care,” “complex feelings in preparing for the end,” and “required support for specialized foster care.” Based on these results, practice and policy implications for child welfare were discussed.
