초록
One of social issues in these days is that obesity in adolescence has been rapidly increased, while fitness has been decreasing. Adolescents in high school years are more interested in their school achievements than any others because of preparation for college entrance exams. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between school achievement and fitness according to Body Mass Index (BMI). Korean male high school students (n=588) participated in this study, and they were divided in to four groups based on BMI. An one-way ANOVA was conducted to compare groups, and Duncan as a post-hoc test was employed to compare differences among groups. According to BMI, mean and standard deviation of school achievement and fitness in each group was calculated, and the correlation between school achievement and fitness was measured. Achievement of mathematics and English among overall school achievement and all factors of fitness except flexibility were significantly related to BMI. There was significant group difference in mathematics achievement and in all factors of fitness such as total scores and ranks. This study compared school achievement and fitness according to BMI. The more obese the participants were, the worse school achievement and the less fitness they had. The results of this study shed light on that an intervention for improving fitness and decreasing obesity in adolescence is considered a school service in terms of education to students.
