The purpose of this study was to explore the formation and processes of a therapeutic alliance perceived by music therapists. For this, 10 music therapists were interviewed in-depth, and 3 subjects, 9 sub-subject, and 23 sub-themes were derived. The results showed that music therapists experienced therapeutic alliance in areas related to music, therapists, and clients, respectively. In the music-related field, the therapeutic alliance was experienced through emotional experience and functional use of music, and in the therapist-related field, it was experienced through therapist’s clinical skills and clinical musical skills. In the client-related area, it was experienced through client’s responsiveness, initiative, immersion, and growth. These results showed that the process of forming a therapeutic alliance goes through the stages of creation, activation, and maintenance, and each preceding experience is accumulating and working organically. This study can be explored qualitatively the nature of the therapeutic alliance and it is meaningful as it can be the basic data to form and maintain the therapeutic alliance in music therapy.
