초록

This article examines how the historical vestiges and the overall landscape of the Gae'seong region were described and portrayed in paintings and maps that were produced during the latter half period of the Joseon dynasty. The old figures of Gae'seong can be extracted from recorded materials, yet a huge collection of illustrations, portrayals, maps, as well as other more special items such as photographic images from the Gelatin Dry-glass plates(that had been created during the Japanese colonial authorities' surveys of the Joseon historical sites) or modern-style photo postcards and other personal photographs, can be very helpful in extrapolating the general features of this region. There are 12(27) types of illustrations and 12 types of maps currently remaining. They are all important data texts that could help us reconstruct the figures of the late Gae'gyeong capital, and trace the changes that were imposed upon it. They should all be digitalized and rendered into a specific form of database.
