This study examined the effect of smokers’ cognitive and emotional reactions on their intention to quit smoking when they encounter COVID-19 and smoking-related information in the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, when smokers are exposed to the news article that smokers are at high risk, the mediating effect and moderated mediating effect are investigated to look at how fear and self-efficacy affect the effect of smokers’ involvement in COVID-19 information on the intention to quit smoking. A nationwide online survey was conducted on adults (19 and over to under 65 years), and 1,000 smokers’ responses were analyzed. The result revealed that the degree of issue involvement did not have a direct effect on the intention to quit smoking, but the complete mediation and moderated mediating effects of fear and self-efficacy were found. Even if smokers pay attention to news articles about smoking and COVID-19 information, fear and self-efficacy that they can control the situation on their own should be intervened in the information processing to have a willingness to quit smoking. In particular, the higher the level of self-efficacy, the greater the mediating effect of fear. The findings suggest practical implications for the necessity of planning and executing a quit smoking campaignconsidering the moderating effect of smokers’ self-efficacy, along with theoretical implications that revealed that self-efficacy is the key variable for inducing smokers to quip smoking in the COVID-19 pandemic.
