초록

This study empirically explores the motivational origins of two psychological individual difference variables known to significantly influence foreign policy preferences: Militant Internationalism (MI) — the belief in the desirability and efficacy of using force — and Cooperative Internationalism (CI) — which emphasizes multilateral cooperation with members of the international community and international organizations. Drawing on Shalom Schwartz’s basic personal values theory, we propose the theoretical hypothesis that the values of Openness and Universalism underlie CI, while Conservation values underpin MI. We statistically test these hypotheses using multiple regression analysis on face-to-face survey data based on a nationally representative sample. The analysis results provided partial support for the theoretical hypotheses. As expected, Universalism increased CI but was unrelated to MI. Contrary to expectations, Conservation values were found to decrease MI, though Self-Enhancement were highly likely to increase it, as anticipated. Unexpectedly, Achievement, a sub-value of Self-Enhancement, was found to be highly likely to strengthen both internationalism predispositions. The internationalism orientations of South Koreans appear to stem from motivations similar, in part, to those found in Western studies.
