This paper investigated the factors that make it difficult for learners to write Chinese characters, examining these factors by topic to provide a detailed analysis. By understanding these results, pre-service Chinese teachers can develop more effective methods for teaching Chinese character writing. A survey was conducted with 106 learners of Korean-style Chinese characters and 113 learners of Chinese characters to gather a diverse range of opinions. After collecting the data, the responses were grouped and analyzed based on keywords. These opinions were then organized by topic to facilitate a discussion on the challenges of writing Chinese characters. The study found that the presence of many similarly shaped characters is the biggest obstacle to accurate writing. Additionally, factors such as the language environment, the accuracy of character writing, writing habits, differences in Chinese character fonts, and the ability to distinguish between Simplified and Traditional Chinese characters also affect learners’ writing skills. Therefore, pre-service Chinese teachers need to consider teaching methods for character writing, the flexibility required in writing characters, and the readability of learning materials.
