This study examined the effect of perceived parental psychological control on career decision level and the mediating role of self-criticism among college students. A total of 472 undergraduates from universities in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Chungcheong regions completed surveys using the PCS-YSR, CDS, and the self-criticism subscale of the DEQ. Hierarchical regression analysis and Sobel test were conducted to analyze the mediating effect. Results indicated that parental psychological control showed a significant positive correlation with self-criticism (r=.368, p<.01) and a significant negative correlation with career decision level (r=-.193, p<.01). Self-criticism partially mediated the relationship between the two variables (Sobel z=-3.88, p<.001), suggesting that parental psychological control undermines career decision level via an emotional-characterological vulnerability pathway. These findings highlight the importance of targeting self-criticism in career counseling through compassion-focused and cognitive restructuring interventions.
