The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of normative beliefs about aggression and empathy on the types of cyberbullying that high school students participant. For this purpose, the Korean Adolescent's Beliefs Supporting Aggression Scale(K-BSAS), Interpersonal Reactivity Index(IRI), Cyberbullying Perpetrator Scale, and Cyberbullying Bystander Scale were used with 670 students in high schools located in Gyeongsangnam-do. Multinominal logistic regression analyses revealed that participants who had high levels of empathy were more likely to belong to cyberbullying bystander group than the perpetrator group. This study is meaningful in that some psychological mechanisms (i.e., normative beliefs about aggression and empathy) related to the types of cyberbullying students participate were explored. The importance of therapeutic interventions focused on improving cognitive empathy was also discussed.
