This study is to examine the relationships between BMII change between age 5 and second grade and school adjustment and self-esteem when they were in second grade. To achieve this, this study used 1,131 children from the Panel Study on Korean Children with regression analysis. The results were as follows. First, there were four groups by BMI change from preschool to second grade-always overweight, became overweight, became normal weight, and always normal weight. Second, there were differences between BMI change group and children’s school adjustment and self-esteem when they were in second grade. Third, there were significant differences between BMI change and school achievement for boys who had became overweight in second grade. In conclusion, there were variations between BMI change from preschool to elementary school and school adjustment and self-esteem by gender. Implication upon the importance of children’s physical development and preventing obesity were discussed.
