초록

The Sichuan opera Legend of the White Snake is a re-created work based on the famous Chinese folk tale Legend of the White Snake, enriched with the regional color and artistic expression unique to Sichuan opera. While the original narrative follows a tragic structure in which the love between a human and a serpent spirit is punished and ultimately doomed, the Sichuan opera version retains this framework but highlights the aesthetic consciousness and local characteristics of the Bashu region through several distinctive narrative devices—such as the lovers’ predestined bond from a previous life, the gender-fluid helper Qingshe, and the comically portrayed toad spirit as an antagonist. Through these adaptations, Sichuan opera’s Legend of the White Snake preserves the outline of the original tale while creating a performance aesthetic infused with local culture. This study introduces its cultural and artistic value through translation and aims to present its unique appeal to Korean audiences and scholars.
