There has been a great increase in the production of TV historical dramas. Most of them are dramas which contain women characters from royal families during the Joseon dynasty. The cable TV network JTBC produced 'Queen Dowager Insu' who has been commonly featured as a leading character in many historical dramas. In this particular version, Queen Dowager Insu is depicted as a cold-hearted, power-hungry figure, while Queen Jeonghee is rather less intelligent but generous enough to be wife to King Sejo, and Queen Yoon, mother of Prince Yeonsangun, is from a humble family and ultimately deposed. Represented in such a way that was historically inaccurate, the drama 'Queen Dowager Insu' ultimately reproduced the conventional stereotypes about royal women. TV historical dramas are creative works with great influence on the public, and therefore should be produced with responsibility. While historical dramas need not only ascribe to exact historical facts, a more cautious approach that strikes a proper balance between creativity and history is necessary in treating actual contexts and figures of history, especially since TV historical dramas have significant influence on popular history.
