초록

Based on the fact that the ROK-US Alliance and its embodiment, USFK, are the linchpin for security on the Korean Peninsula, this paper aims to explore the psychological foundation of attitudes toward the Alliance, USFK, and the U.S. leadership in the region and the world. In particular, it attempts to estimate the effects of such motivational bases as left-right political orientation, postmaterialism, right wing authoritarianism (RWA), social dominance orientation (SDO), system justification motivation on those attitudes. The study would contribute to better understanding the security dimension in individual’s political ideology, which has been suggested to be specific to Korean voters. In general, those motivational variables are not found to have consistent effects on the individual’s U.S.-related evaluations. Only the RWA seems to increase positive evaluation of the ROK-US Alliance and USFK, Korea’s diplomatic independence, the U.S-led world order.
