This study aims to analyze the factors influencing reemployment and wage levels among middle-aged individuals after retirement. It uses an integrated econometric approach. The study utilizes data from the 26th wave of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS). The target sample consists of 677 individuals aged 40 to 64 who experienced retirement. To address potential sample selection bias, the Heckman two-step selection model was employed. This model jointly estimates the determinants of reemployment and subsequent wage levels. The empirical results indicate that gender and health status have a significant impact on the probability of reemployment. Men and healthier individuals are more likely to be reemployed. Among those who returned to the labor market, wage levels were strongly influenced by several factors. These included gender, education, health status, industry, occupation, employment type (regular vs. irregular, full-time vs. part-time), and firm size. Workers in the finance and insurance sectors, as well as regular full-time employees and those in large firms (with over 1,000 employees), earned higher wages. In contrast, workers in sales or elementary occupations received lower pay. These findings highlight the structural dualism in the labor market that influences wage disparities among reemployed middle-aged individuals. The study highlights the importance of comprehensive policy interventions that extend beyond job creation. It emphasizes the need for customized support tailored to gender and health conditions, training for occupational transitions, and improvements in employment quality. The study also demonstrates that ignoring the interdependence between reemployment and wage outcomes can lead to biased interpretations of the results. Future research should explore longitudinal patterns and include pre-retirement employment characteristics.
