초록

Jong-gi Ma is a diaspora poet who left his homeland and went off to the United States, seeking freedom and education in medicine. This thesis has examined the meanings of life as a diaspora and a father as well as the significance of poet's homeland demonstrated in Ma's poetry. Although Ma had enjoyed his comfortable life of a middle class man in the U.S. he always could not help but long for his homeland in loneliness. The subjects of such endless longing in Ma's poetry are the author's father and his fatherland. On the other hand, the portrait of a father depicted in Ma's poems is the ideal figure the poet dreams for his homeland. Writing poems were Ma's tonic for his life while his nostalgia and pain of living far away from his family and fatherland were the motifs of his poems. While his face were headed towards his home country and his highly and lonely spirit was well kept, Ma has expanded his poetic territory with the sentiment of a diaspora. Jong-gi Ma demonstrates a figure of a father as a holistic man of noble character; such portrait coincides with his hope for his country. He tried to develop a beautiful future for his nation. Such struggle and passion are proved to be the characteristics of a diaspora; as an immigrant he never let go of his root and his obligative minds. It is significant that the father and the fatherland which dominated Ma's conscious have been diffused his sense of being a poet and poetic world with new recognition. Also, it is shown in Ma's poems that the poet's pursuit of fatherland has never been discontinued in the poet's life expressing and rendering longing for childhood peace and his father in order to overcome the wound of a diaspora
