초록

From a literary-historical perspective, this study reconsiders the significance of “Jasonsbojeon (子孫寶傳),” which is an album that compiles the Korean handwritten texts (sujeok) of women from the Meng (孟氏) family of Sinchang (新昌), by analyzing the transcription records of literary works included in the volume. Accordingly, among the sujeok contained in “Jasonsbojeon,” this study examines those that transcribe the vernacular novel “Okhobingsim (玉壺氷心)” and “Jikgeumdo (織錦圖).” The results are summarized as follows: First, the transcription record of Okhobingsim found in Sujeok No. 21 provides material through which women's manuscript-copying practices can be confirmed and offers grounds for estimating the period of the work's emergence and its patterns of transmission. In particular, the fact that a vernacular novel, which was meticulously transcribed in the early eighteenth century, was shared within the family not only provides an important clue for closely examining the developmental process of vernacular fiction but also makes identification of the reading lists of inner-quarter women at the time and the scope of their literary enjoyment possible. Second, “Jikgeumdo” included in Sujeok No. 33 reveals that women in the late Joseon period enjoyed intellectual and play culture in a composite manner through visual images. The palindrome poem was transformed into inner-quarter play culture through vernacular translation and pictorial representation. In particular, the pattern in which this was transmitted solely through images without poetic lines reflects the women's intention to embrace the image of an intellectual woman symbolized by the figure of So Yak-ran. That is, the arduous act of reproducing “Jikgeumdo” through transcription is confirmed to have been an active cultural practice that went beyond mere amusement and sought to affirm and realize one's intellectual identity. Through this analysis, this study confirms that the work is not merely an album compiling the handwritten texts of women from a single family, but also a valuable source that concretely reveals the literary tastes and intellectual activities of women as readers in the late Joseon period. Furthermore, “Jasonsbojeon” holds significance as an important literary-historical foundation for understanding the transmission patterns of vernacular fiction and the dynamism of inner-quarter culture in a multidimensional way.
