The purpose of this paper is to propose a pedagogy that engages Problem-based Learning (PBL) with academic writing. This paper suggests how to productively reuse abandoned whistle-stops around us by writing proposals. Writing through PBL enables learners to approach problems more practically focusing on a given topic. Contemporary Korean society requires learners to solve problems and pays attention to writing as a practical methodology. In this class, educators associate ‘academic writing course’ with a proposal as to how to reuse or reevaluate the space of whistle-stops that are not currently used. Whistle-stops, which are the legacy of the Japanese colonial modernity and the industrialization period from the 1900s to 1980s, have been abandoned or have been merely treated as a cultural heritage. Therefore, students need to design the space with more creative management. This class requires learners to reconsider the use of the space of overlooked whistle-stops and contests the possibility of the present use of them by writing team-based proposals.
