초록

The credibility of the veracity of photography was sharply destructed with the advent of digital photography. It is rooted in a general but impetuous thought that the possibility of an unlimited transformation of the photographic image necessarily causes a radical breakage between the photographic image and the real object that it represents, which leads to the assertion that the photographic theories of Barthes, Bazin, and Benjamin are anachronistic because of the death of an “index” in photography. But the concept of index presupposed by the “indexical argument” differs completely from those of Barthes, Bazin, Benjamin, and even Peirce. With a close investigation of the concept of “index,” this paper reveals that the transformability and manipulability of digital photography do not necessarily imply the photographic index, but instead have an indeterminate potential of enhancing the indexical elements in photography instead.
