This study focuses on the leadership capability of college students and pays attention to leadership experience as one of the effective ways to develop leadership in higher education. First, it examines the importance of leadership and leadership development conceptually, and emphasizes the role of leadership experience in improving college students’ leadership capabilities. Second, it analyzes the type, amount, and timing of leadership experiences that affect the leadership level of college students. For the analysis, the study uses references related to leadership, leadership development, and leadership experience, and it uses quantitative research data for systemizing leadership experience. The quantitative data was taken from surveys conducted on 428 college students of various years at 16 universities in South Korea to identify differences in leadership level depending on the type, amount, and timing of leadership experience. The results showed that college students’ leadership experiences were significantly related to their leadership level and included not only experiences as leaders in organizations but also experiences as followers in group activities. The study concluded that college students as potential leaders can develop their leadership capability through both direct and indirect leadership experiences.
