This study focused on robbery offenders who have previously committed robbery and analyzed the background characteristics of offenders and victims, crime locations, and crime characteristics. In particular, we examined the factors predicting whether a robbery offender has a previous conviction of robbery. For this purpose, a total of 512 cases collected from the 16 Public Prosecutors’ Office from 2011 to 2013 were analyzed. We compared 186 cases committed by offenders with previous conviction of robbery with 326 cases committed by offenders without previous conviction of robbery. As a result, we found various differences between the two groups. Above all, robbery offenders with previous conviction of robbery were older than offenders without previous conviction of robbery. In addition, robbery offenders with previous conviction of robbery were more likely to target a female victim. Moreover, robbery offenders with previous conviction of robbery tended to prepare weapon and/or ligature and bring them to the scene. Furthermore, robbery offenders with previous conviction of robbery were more likely to commit break-in robbery than offenders without previous conviction of robbery. Robbery than offenders without previous conviction of robbery tended to commit crime in their home and neighborhood. Also, they were more likely to commit street robbery. Lastly, based on our results, we discussed limitations of the study and implications for robbery prevention.
