초록

The objectives of this study are to examine how longitudinal developmental changes in the relationship between depressive symptoms and aggression in middle school students affect online and offline delinquency and how they are also influenced by gender differences, and to find counseling intervention methods to improve mental health and reduce delinquency. Based on the dataset built by the Korea National Youth Policy Institute for 3 year period from 2018 to 2020 targeting first graders of middle school, this study analyzed a total of 2,325 students (1,248 boys, 1,077 girls) using Auto-Regressive Cross-Lagged(ARCL) model validation and multigroup analysis through AMOS Ver.22. The result shows that, first, the autoregressive and cross-lagged effect of depressive symptoms and aggression were significant, verifying that there is a longitudinal reciprocal causal relationship. Second, among the depressive symptoms and aggression at the final time point, only aggression was found to be a factor that increased online and offline juvenile delinquency. Third, in the case of female students, the depressive symptoms in the first year predicted that of the second year, and the depressive symptoms in the second year predicted that of the third year again. That is, in the case of female students, it confirms the autoregressive path, in which the depressive symptoms at the previous point intensify that of the later time point, was stronger in female students than in male students. Fourth, in the case of female students, when depressive symptoms are high, aggression tends to increase the depressive symptoms in the second year when it has persisted, rather than the first year’s depressive symptoms increase aggression as a primary pathway. In the case of male students, the initial depressive symptoms lead to aggression relatively quickly. The study results show that depressive symptoms and aggression are in mutually reinforcing and cyclical relationships with respect to delinquency in middle school students, and the developing process of the longitudinal mutual causal relationship between depressive symptoms and aggression on delinquency varies according to gender. Therefore, the significance of the study lies in that it confirmed that clinical intervention should also be implemented in consideration of gender differences.
