This study examined the concurrent and lingering effects of cognitive avoidance and behavioral avoidance on the depressive symptoms. The subjects were assessed by self-reports on four measure: Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression(CES-D), Ruminative Response Style (RRS), and Cognitive-Behavioral Avoidance Scale (CBAS). The total subjects were 724 participants. The results from this Study were as follows: First, depressive symptoms were showed high readings after three months. Second, initial depressive symptoms partially mediated the relationship between brooding with depressive symptoms that persisted three months later. Second, there was no significant impact of reflection on initial depressive symptoms and depressive symptoms three months later. Third, initial depressive symptoms partially mediated the relationship between behavioral avoidance with depressive symptoms that persisted three months later. Also, behavioral avoidance had significant direct and indirect effects on depressive symptoms three months later. Fourth, initial depressive symptoms predicted depressive symptoms three months later. This study was confirmed the pathological characteristic of brooding compare to reflection, and the essential role of behavioral avoidance on the onset and persistence of depressive symptoms.
