This study examines how Netflix's implementation of genre diversity actually functions. Using genre-related keywords from 228 Korean feature films produced between 2020 and 2025 and released on Netflix, the study analyzes film genre composition patterns and narrative tendencies. The findings indicate that Netflix partially expands the diversity of the Korean film archive through its distribution of indie films and drama-centric cinema, alongside its exclusive supply of science fiction genre works. At the same time, the catalog remains heavily skewed toward commercially dominant genres such as action-adventure and thrillers, characterized by dark thematic tones and spectacle-driven narratives. Netflix original films also show the tendency to reproduce conventional gender representations centred on physical prowess. This study frames these dynamics as a process of “Netflix-led standardization of genres” and empirically reflects on the implications of platformization for genre practices in Korean cinema.
