In contemporary art creation, artists often express their intended content through sensory and intuitive means, allowing viewers to perceive what is commonly referred to as “atmosphere.” German philosopher Gernot Böhme distinguishes between the atmosphere perceived by viewers and the atmosphere intentionally created by artists, naming the latter ‘das Atmosphärische.’ This study aims to systematize directing methods based on Böhme’s concept within floral design and to propose these methods as practical guidelines for artists during their creative process. To achieve this, 63 floral artworks exhibiting strong atmospheric qualities were selected from a larger collection of 1,150 pieces. Through behavioral scene analysis, 260 descriptive statements were extracted and categorized using the KJ Method into 35 sub-concepts, 12 intermediate concepts, and 6 overarching concepts. This conceptual framework, along with supporting statements and examples, represents strategies to evoke ‘das Atmosphärische’ through intuitive perception of the artist’s intended expression. These methods offer floral designers concrete ideas and techniques to effectively direct ‘das Atmosphärische’ in their work. To validate the guideline’s applicability, the researcher applied it to five works created for a master’s exhibition, comparing initial intuitive drafts with revised versions. The comparison showed improvements in visual communication and overall completeness, confirming that the guideline contributed to meaningful enhancement in artistic expression. Historically, directing atmospheric expression has relied heavily on individual artist intuition, which can be challenging especially for novices lacking developed intuitive skills. The guideline developed here provides a valuable educational tool enabling beginners to learn and improve their ability to direct ‘das Atmosphärische.’ It also offers experienced artists new perspectives and methods to expand their creative experimentation. By employing qualitative research methods such as behavioral scene analysis and the KJ Method, this study offers a systematic and methodological approach to directing atmosphere in floral design, moving beyond purely subjective intuition. It establishes educational foundation for novice artists to acquire directing skills for ‘das Atmosphärische,’ emphasizing the study’s significance in both theory and practice within contemporary floral art creation.
