초록
This study aimed to analyze the operational status of academic advising at major U.S. universities, identify shared characteristics, and based on these findings, propose the roles of advising faculty and institutional improvement strategies for the successful implementation of Korea’s autonomous major selection system in Korean universities. The specific objectives of the study were as follows: First, it examines academic advising practices at major U.S. universities to identify shared characteristics. Second, drawing on implications from the U.S. cases, it explores the roles of advising faculty and proposes institutional improvement strategies under Korea’s autonomous major selection system. To achieve these objectives, this study conducted a comparative analysis of materials from major U.S. universities. The results identified five shared characteristics: a clearly defined responsibility structure, regular and structured consultations, individualized advising from a developmental perspective, a multi-layered support system, and an integrated career support system. In addition, advising faculty members perform comprehensive roles as educational consultants, major exploration guides, career development facilitators, student advocates, and mentors. Based on these implications, the study proposes the following strategies for Korean universities to implement an autonomous major selection system: (1) clarification and professional development of the advising faculty role; (2) implementation of major exploration and in-depth consultation programs; and (3) establishment of an integrated consultation system.
