This paper aimed to explore the evidence of nationalism and post-nationalism in the writings of Kang Sangjoong and Seo Kyungsik, who are, at present, working as representative essayists in diaspora. Their writings have been widely translated into Korean, have gained a large number of readers in the Korean society, and have exerted great influence on intellectuals. In order to understand the viewpoints of Kang and Seo, it is necessary to examine closely the theme of nationalism and post-nationalism in their writings. In Kang’s essays, there are impressive speculations on nationalism and post-nationalism. Furthermore, he deeply empathizes with post-nationalism while taking a critical view of nationalism. Post-modernism and post-colonialism are important theoretical criteria that Kang Sangjoong sees the realities with. In his writings, there is a lack of reflection on post-modernism and post-nationalism. Seo Kyungsik is critical of the reality where post-nationalism and post-modernism are expanding their power. Moreover, he thinks that there are some parts about post-nationalism that can be empathized with. However, he has determined that such allegations extinguish the resistant elements of the national liberation movement and nationalism. Seo emphasizes that post-nationalism, which is prevalent in Japanese society, ultimately has been degenerated into a means of preventing minority resistance rather than conducting reflection on Japanese nationalism.
