초록
The present study investigates how Southeast Asian students adapt to Korean college in terms of Honneth’s theory of struggle for recognition. Their trial of adaptation in the context of college in Korea was viewed through three forms of recognition: love, rights, and esteem. In particular, this study has focused on the causes of disrespect which Southeast Asian students experience as individuals in relation to the mutual recognition with others in and out of a college and the ways of struggle for recognition to overcome disrespects from others. The rationale of the present study is to provide a moral theoretical foundation to understand the increasing number of settlers including foreign students in Korean society and to provide fundamental social unity by expanding mutual recognition between the settlers and Koreans. The study was conducted by one-on-one interviews with four Southeast Asian students. The results showed that Southeast Asian students experienced deficiency in Korean and English, difficulties in their relationships with Korean students who do not take the initiative, and disrespect for their home countries. The struggles for recognition of Southeast Asian students were consequently built by being patient and understanding others in spite of anger, creating a community meeting of Southeast Asian students for expressing their anger, and directly expressing the demand of Southeast Asian students toward Korean students. Further suggestions and implications grounded in these findings were also discussed accordingly.
