As the ‘Idol Upbringing Program’ increases and the idol communicates with the fans in real time, the fans are overly demanding the idol to maintain a certain attitude beyond the public domain. The current study examined whether the fan entitlement is formed differently according to the gender of fans and the gender of idols, whether gender differences were found in the fanship, relationship satisfaction, and relationship maintenance intention experienced by fans, and how fanship, relationship satisfaction, and relationship maintenance intention are related to fan entitlement. Results showed the male fans reported a higher level of fan entitlement than female fans, the fan entitlement toward female idols were higher than male idols, and female fans experienced higher fanship, relationship satisfaction, and relationship maintenance intention than male fans. In addition, fanship had negative effects on fan entitlement, relationship satisfaction had a positive effect on fan entitlement, and relationship maintenance intention had no effect on fan entitlement. The study suggests that even fans may require excessive emotional labor based on fan activities and relationships with idols, and it is necessary to reconsider the perception of fan-idol interaction.
