초록

The purpose of this study is to understand the dynamic process of news frame-changing in terms of the two-dimensional analytical framework proposed by Chyi and McCombs. Unlike previous news framing approaches focusing on issue-specific perspectives, this study defines a news frame as an aggregation of salient attributes of a news event and posits that news frames dynamically change over an event’s lifespan. Specifically, we explore how news framing changed in coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings in 2007 and whether there were differences in the way news frames-changed between Korean and American newspapers. A content analysis was conducted to examine Chosun Ilbo and New York Times reportage of the shootings. Findings show dynamic changes in news frames used to cover the shootings over time, with each newspaper revealing its own pattern of news frame use. The implications of these findings for future research are discussed.
