This study aimed to investigate the effect of compassion fatigue of music therapists on burnout and the moderating effect of social support. Data from 92 people was analyzed. A survey was distributed via email through the Korean Music Therapy Association and the National Music Therapist Association. To measure compassion fatigue, V5, which Stamm(2010) modified the tool in Figley(1995), was used. The scale for burnout was Maslach & Jackson’s(1981) MBI, which adapted by Choi(2003), was used and for social support, a scale developed by Park(1985) was used. The research results are as follows. First, there were differences in compassion fatigue, burnout and social support depending on the general characteristics. Second, compassion fatigue showed a negative correlation with the social support score and all sub-factors, and burnout showed negative correlation with the social support score and all sub-factors. Compassion fatigue showed a positive correlation with the burnout score and all sub-factors. Third, compassion fatigue had a significant effect on the score of burnout, and emotional support had a significant moderating effect among the sub-factors of social support. This study aims to ascertain the moderating effects of social support, with the significance lying in devising measures to prevent and cope with the burnout of music therapists.
