Folktales are texts with high educational value in Korean language education, not only from the perspective of language education but also from literature and cultural education perspectives. Folktales provide educational motivation by stimulating learners’ interest and imagination, and are highly usable compared to other literary texts due to their universality that makes them easily understandable to international learners. Furthermore, as Koreans share a common understanding of folktale content, they are efficient texts for providing education in Korean language and culture. One of the biggest challenges that international students face during their time at Korean universities is listening to one-sided lectures by professors and participating in public speaking activities such as presentations and discussions. International students have limited to no opportunity to speak up during lectures, and when there is opportunity, many feel scared due to a lack of confidence in speaking Korean fluently. By utilising flipped learning, student-led question-and-answer approaches, and applying storytelling and role-playing in folktales, we can help international students’ to develop their speaking abilities and foster a more proactive and self-directed learning environment during their university studies. This paper aims to propose an approach for Korean cultural education, highlighting the advantages of folktales through a case study of liberal arts education at S University.
